Susan retired in 2005 as principal of a middle school in the Caesar Rodney School District in Camden, DE. She worked in the district for 22 years as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. Susan began her career in 1965-1967 in KY as a teacher and after moving to MA, taught there from 1968 - 1970.

During her time as a principal of Postlethwait Middle School, Susan instituted inclusion for special education students and saw scores rise on the state test from below standard to meeting the standard in reading and math. She also introduced looping seventh and eighth grade students in our school, beginning with the special education population and eventually to the entire population. This was also met with success for the students increasing scores on the state test as well as through out the year. Her school was ranked either Commendable or Superior each year. The district was one of the few in DE that has been ranked Superior many times.

Since retiring, Susan has worked with Vision 2015 and DASL (Delaware Association of School Leadership) as a thought partner. She has worked with 3 different middle school principals giving support and ideas on how they could become more of an instructional leader in place of a building manager.
